Action Bronson & Statik Selektah (Feat. Nina Sky) – “Cocoa Butter”

“I don’t give a fuck what nobody says no more…No more playin’ the sidelines…”

Action Bronson is, essentially, only about a few things:

  • Food.
  • Women.
  • Weed.
  • Fast cars.
  • Sports.
  • and ripping the mic.

Really, that’s what 95% of his songs are about, and you know what? He’s really fucking good at it.

Bronsolino is a larger than life figure, both on and off the microphone. He’s a 280-pound ginger of Albanian descent, a former chef from Flushing, Queens with a flowing beard that only the manliest of men can dream of, whom on the mic sounds like the Wu-Tang legend Ghostface Killah, and his rhymes are a surreal and audacious mashup of all the things I listed above. Bronson has been winning hearts and minds all over the hip-hop world, and the dude absolutely deserves it. He may not be the deepest emcee, but he’s damn fun to listen to. Oh, and if you get the chance to see him live, do it.

Though Bronson has been on the scene for a few years it really wasn’t until 2011 that he really made his arrival with Well Done, a collaborative project  with acclaimed Boston producer, Statik Selektah, a record which still knocks from top to bottom. Rediscovering Well Done recently I’m amazed at just how well Selektah’s beats come together with Bronson’s rapid fire rhymes.

“Cocoa Butter” is a hero’s welcome, perfect for Bronson to introduce himself over. It sounds damn triumphant with the sample and the horns, and Bronson’s boasts are completely on-point. Hell, I wouldn’t mind eating rare bison in the mountains, sipping the finest in bubblies and getting box seats at the game. I mean, damn! Bronson makes it clear he’s out to win and he puts in work on this one. The icing on the cake is guest vocals from Nina Sky (whatever happened to them by the way? I remember “Move Ya Body” being big in the Bronx back in the summer of ’04!), which only makes this track even more proper and utterly smooth. This track definitely brings a smile to my face, and I’m looking forward to Bronson’s next record, Mr. Wonderful, dropping later this month.
