Has-Lo – “Everything Is”
For the last few days I’ve been feeling under the weather, dealing with sore throats, harsh coughs, and all kinds of mucus (oh God, the stuff that was coming out of my nose…), so I’ve been cooped up inside with a lot of medication and a lot of music. One album which has been on a steady burn for me for these past few was In Case I Don’t Make It, the acclaimed 2011 release of the Philadelphia emcee Has-Lo.
In Case I Don’t Make It is a beast. A low, slow, simmering and incisive work. It’s that album which will completely piss on your sunny day, as Has comes across as one of the most dour emcees you’ll ever hear, stewing in his own mix of hostility, depression, and anger. Even though he’s been on the scene for only a few years, on ICIDMI Has rhymes like a past-his-prime veteran, looking back on his years with a quiet contempt. His hopes and passion for life and music are long expired. No emo.
ICIDMI is a cerebral record, one which rewards a close listen and mental preparation. One of my favorites of the record is this track, “Everything Is,” which is a fine showcase as to what to expect. It’s a downtrodden, uneasy listen, and Has goes at it as if it’s his last words. I find that it’s a very fitting listen for when you’re sick as hell and you’re just as miserable.
