I know we’re in the middle of fall, but this listen from Magdalena Bay feels like summer’s last hurrah.
This week I’ve been having a good time with Mercurial World, the debut from the new kids on the block, Magdalena Bay, Los Angeles-based duo of singer Mica Tenenbaum and producer Matthew Lewin. The pair are definitely in their bag when it comes to harnessing the catchiest bits of the last four decades of pop music, throwing it a blender, and creating a sound that’s original, familiar, and anthemic at the same time.
I mean really, they wear their influences on their sleeves, but Lewin’s sleek and propulsive production and Tenenbaum’s airy vocals beckon you into their kaleidoscopic world, and it’s a fun, breezy listen!
“Dawning of The Season” has been on my mind ALL doggone day. Blame it on that driving groove, the alluring whispery vocals, and that glossy, pressed up feel of it. It’s an retro-modern, ultra-cool banger, and one I can’t get out of my head!
